Disclaimer: Please don’t read this if you haven’t seen season 1/ previous episodes or read The Mortal Instruments (TMI) series. All reviews will have a small spoiler free section for the episode I am reviewing at the start and then will move on to a spoiler section. As always I hope to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
Shadowhunters Season 2 began a bit meh for me. At least 80% of the 40 minute episode was the teaser trailers all strung together. I was kind of confused waiting for the bang, some big piece of information or scene that we hadn’t yet seen, but it just did not come.
If you haven’t yet watched the episode I would actually suggest waiting until next week so you can binge watch episode 1&2 together. You aren’t really going to be spoiled on anything significant between now and then and if you have watched all of the teaser trailers like I have then you have seen basically all of it anyway.
On a positive note, they have 100% fixed the seraph blade’s and they no longer look like ridiculous plastic Lightsabers. The graphics are also much better, Magnus is now quite magical
and the demons/downworlders appropriately explode – although there is still no icor. Acting has also improved with Alberto, Dom and Matt the stand outs of the episode. I am also very intrigued to see how Aldertree is going to fit into everything.
Overall I feel like I can’t really judge this episode appropriately because I have already seen most of it. Might be worth checking out my thoughts on all the promos and teaser trailers if you want a more in depth spoiler free review type post, which can be found here.
OK, lets get to the nitty gritty petty thoughts and feels for episode 1!
So my spoiler free section may have been a little harsh, the more and more I think about it I did enjoy the episode character wise it feels like Jace is finally Jace and the fact that Magnus and Alec are actually communication is brilliant. Can I also point out how much I love the chemistry between Clary and Simon, like the Climon friendship feels are right up there!
It is so genuine, even though Simon is still going through the I’m in love with Clary stage. For the small amount of time we saw Izzy she slayed and I just cannot wait to see more of her and of course Valentine was super manipulative and evil and I just hope it continues throughout this season and the big reveal comes next season.
I am sticking with my dislike of Jocelyn and I kinda wish she was still in her magical coma, I feel like she is really going to get in the way. Though she does seem very in character with her hate of Jace (because of the demon blood) but I cant believe she had the shot to kill Valentine and her only concern was Jace. Though this is really going to fuck him up in the head for the rest of the season.
But do you know who was super ooc? Luke! As if Luke would leave Jocelyn in the Institute without him, or at least put up more of a fight. Also there is no way he would have allowed the pack to treat Simon like they did!
I am still not keen on the fact that they need to like activate the ruins I think that would be really inconvenient in the middle of a fight or to you know ruin up before the fight, like how long is it activated for? I have also noticed a real lack of actually fighting demons it’s like they have forgotten what the Shandowhunters are about. There are so many Shadowhunters in the Institute that they could be sending of on her missions in the background.
Another thing that I really loved was Izzy and Alec having Jace’s back and how well they are portraying that relationship.
I know there was a few things that irritated me at the time (like Aldretree’s ruins rubbing off) but I can’t think of them all now, so you know mustn’t have been that bad.
Looking forward to next weeks episode that will feel like more of the first episode and to see what that brings.
What did you all think? Did you like the start of the season? Will you keep watching? Who do you think are nailing their characters?
